Day 6 - Horseback Riding and Cookout

Saturday (June 11) was a day of relaxation and fun for the members of the 2011 Navajo Oral History project.

The Winona State University students rode horses in Canyon de Chelly National Monument with a Navajo Guide and saw some ancient Anasazi ruins and petroglyphs.

It was a two-hour ride, with the horses full-out galloping for most of the last half-hour of the ride. Everyone had fun, but there are many sore butts in the group.

After the ride, we enjoyed lunch at the A & W in Chinle, Arizona, then headed up into the Chuska Mountains about Lukachukai, Arizona, to help shear sheep and have a cook-out with Vernon and Miranda Haskie and their children.

In addition to being a world-class silversmith, Vernon knows his way around a grill. He cooked steak, burgers and hotdogs for our group.

Miranda Haskie taught the students how to make flat bread tortillas.

Vernon Haskie is also good with a lasso, catching the sheep for shearing. The students also tried their hand at the lasso.

After lunch, the group took a hike down to the creek and to a beautiful cliff edge overlooking Lukachukai.

The evening was spent in the dorm rooms at Diné College working on transcribing interviews, downloading video and editing photographs.
